Present-day Ken Caryl Ranch consists of the Master Association formed in 1978 and the Metropolitan District created in 1989, which were elected at-large by the residents. The Master Association consists of several resident committees that help guide the business of the Ranch.
The Ken Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District offers playgrounds, softball diamonds, soccer fields, an inline hockey rink, and volleyball courts for the enjoyment of the residents of the District, while the Ken Caryl Ranch Master Association manages over 4,800 acres of foothills open space available for residents' use. This includes the Dakota Hogback area and land to the north and west of the Valley. Over twenty miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails have been developed in these areas.
A variety of wildlife also inhabits Ken Caryl Ranch, and is often sighted among the many open spaces in the area. Deer herds use the Dakota Hogback as a winter range and move back into the mountain areas during the summer. Turkeys, coyotes, grouse, elk and occasionally mountain lions and black bears may also be seen. Throughout the season, adults, families, children and seniors utilize the paths for leisure, relaxation and fitness.
